Issue 09: The America Issue – Spring/Summer 2017
The Business of Fashion is proud to release its latest special print issue. This time, we focused our lens on the USA. Around the world, times are changing and America — still the world’s largest consumer market and greatest exporter of cultural and technological change — is at the centre of the storm. To make sense of it all, we travelled across the country to assess the risks and rewards of doing business in Trump’s America and decode the wider waves of change emanating from the USA. In New York City, we sat down with our cover star, Anna Wintour, a kind of head of state for the fashion industry at large. In Columbus, Ohio, we examined America’s long-suffering mall brands. In Hollywood, we spoke with the ringmasters of American entertainment who have their eyes firmly fixed on the opportunity at the intersection of fashion and popular culture. In Atlanta, Georgia, we examined the coming of so-called “sewbots” and the new industrial revolution in automated garment manufacturing. We also spoke with a wave of politically active fashion designers; spotlighted the talented immigrants driving change at four great American fashion brands: Calvin Klein, Coach, Diane von Furstenberg and Oscar de la Renta; reflected on Anna Sui, America’s most underrated fashion designer; and examined the booms and busts of America’s largest luxury businesses. The issue also contains BoF’s first annual report on “The Best Companies to Work for in Fashion,” measured in terms of rewards & benefits, leadership & development and culture & working environment.
